1. Write a good title and description. Leave out the hype of trying to promote your site. Don't use words like "my," "I" "best" "#1," etc. Write an unbiased description of your site. Focus on the content that's on your site. Look at some of the sites listed and take your queue from those. Your title should be the name of your business/website. Some categories are specific about how titles worded, so read the "description" for the category Before suggesting your site. Writing a good subscription will stand out with the editor reviewing that category, which means he probably has very little to rewrite.
2. Submit your site to the most appropriate category. If you submit it to the wrong category, then when it does get reviewed, the reviewer will send it to the correct category thus further delaying your listing (if it gets listed), because an editor for the current category has to review your site to see if it should be listed there.
3. Some sites can be deep linked (listed in more than one category). If you think you're site has enough pertinent content to be listed in more than one category, then DON"T submit it yourself. Leave a note attached to your original submission saying you think it could also fit in XYZ category. If the editor agrees with you, then he/she will send it to the other category(ies) to be reviewed as well. The point is that deep linking is up to editor discretion.
4. It's possible that your site was listed, but not in the category you submitted it to. To search for your site, then enter the address without the www into the search box. If your site was recently listed, then it can take weeks before it'll show up in the search.
5. Don't harass the editor who is named for that category. Most editors don't like being asked about sites waiting to be reviewed. Look at their profile, and if they say not to contact them about sites submitted, then Don't contact them, as it will be a waste of your time.
6. Remember, just because a category doesn't have a named editor doesn't mean your site won't get reviewed. Every category has
several editors. Editors named above the category you're applying to can review sites in that category. Plus, some editors can edit in every category of the directory. Your site will eventually be reviewed, just not in the amount of time YOU think it should take for a review.
7. Another misconception amongst site submitters is that they'll receive something from Dmoz telling them that their site has been declined or listed. That's not true. In fact, you'll only know if it's listed if you find it in their directory, but you'll never know if it's been deleted unless you can get the editor to tell you the status (which, again, most will be reluctant to give website status checks). Basically, it a game of "hurry up and wait." You could wait for days/weeks/months, and, in a lot of cases, several years before your site is listed. And, even if your site is reviewed, it could be declined for several reasons, including quality, which is up to editor discretion.
8. Make sure that your site can easily be found over the Internet, as Dmoz editors do their own searches for quality websites and you want to increase the chance that they'll come across yours and want to list it. Remember, a large percentage of sites listed in Dmoz weren't even submitted; they were found from all corners of the Internet - so promote your site.
9. The BIGGEST tip anyone can give you is to
submit, then forget. It's no use to keep checking up on your site to see if it's listed in Dmoz. It's a waste of your time. You could better spend that time promoting your site using other venues and getting the word out about it.
Remember, editors volunteer their FREE time to the directory. Some days they might not edit one site, while other days they may edit several sites. It's up to them on how much free time they have for editing. Without the editors then your site will take even longer to be reviewed. Plus, an editor can choose not to review a site if he/she is uncomfortable doing so because of the site's content.
