Penalty for OTHERS ripping you?

Further to the Google and Original Content thread I would like to ask if this has ever happened to anyone else.

I have been running a successful site for the past 10 months and have enjoyed top rankings for all my key terms for the past 5 months. People started seeing the success if the site and started "cloning" my site.

Now, my site was there LONG before the others, that is an important point. These clones are those pathetic scumbag clones that literally "CLONE" your site. They copied everything from design to text and some didn't even bother to change their sites names from mine to theirs!

Since these clones emerged, it looks like I am receiving a duplicate content penalty and even worse, the clones are receiving better rankings for my keywords!

My domain is 10 months old, and in fairness, the clones registered their domains about a year ago.

This leads me to believe that Google is seeing original content as content from the older domain.

Am I being stupid here? I am sure Google would not be this stupid. They couldn't be. I have not done anything different to my site. The content has been the same and I am not using ANY blackhat methods.

Has anyone else experienced this?

PS: Before anyone suggests that I file some DMCA complaints, trust me, it would take toooooo long!

Yes, in my opinion you are right... I would suggest that you keep changing your content frequently and getting good backlinks...

Yes, this has been reported before when two sites have exactly the same content, and I'm sure PR also plays a role too.

Even if it does take a long time, I'd still fill a DMCA complaint with Google and Yahoo because if you think about it these sites are always going to have a headstart on you in terms of age.
Unlike you, they don't have to spend time writing good content, which gives them another advantage.

It's an awful situtation; hope you can sort it out.

Cheers,
Paz.

Yes it happened to me

It sucks.

If they are really determined to destroy your site like they were in my case there is little if any thing you can do about it. In my case they resorted to their own DNS hosting of numerous bogus sites duplicating my content - and thats just the nice stuff.

You can file DMCA complaints and after numerous reports ask google for some relief. They'll give you the typical "canned" answers and maybe intermitten relief

It really amounts to a fight over a domain name - that some one else wants. Lock it up for 10 years and see if that helps
