I have always wondered how sucessful an SEO Company is able to get links to there clients site. Do they have the same problems as if I were to do link building myself? Such as a turn-down or Spam filtering. Or do they have more sucess then someone like me who is experianced in SEO but don't have time. Also another question is about this forum are the Sig links counting as a KW even though they do not have PR? Are they effective? Also with any SEO Company do they go to general sites asking for a link? A site I am refering to is something SEO-Guy has done that is linked to this site http://www.astrobiology.com. A site like that with links at the bottom is that one-way links or sponsered links? What is the sucess rate on that kind of site? If there are links that are pointing to other sites already would the webmaster accept your request for a link exchange?

The best thing to do to start out building links is get in every relevant directory you can. Especially if the keywords are geospecific, things like california real estate, find real estate directories for califonia. One of the first to submit to is Dmoz.org.

After that start the emailing campaign to get relevant sites linking with you.

Some tricks..

Go to the competition and look at their backlinks. That is a great list of people who will most likely do a link exchange with you.

Next, go back to dmoz.org, and email all of those sites that are relevant to you but not in direct competition, these are all sites that will most likely have good standing in google becuase they're in dmoz.

Go back to the directories you submitted to and email all of the sites that are relevant to you but not in direct competition. The sites that are in directories are sites that actively promote their site looking for links, they'll be most likely happy to link with you.

It doesn't matter if a page doesn't have PR, If it's listed in google and has your link on it, the next time it gets spidered you will most likely have credit for the link, the more PR it has, just means it'll be faster until you get credit for it.

Yes I did send some emails but never heard from them nor I saw a link. Is this normal? They were pretty good request.

Wyrickj, send me a private message with the email you used and I'll see if I can help you with it. Most of the time when I'm sending out emails I'll get a 10 - 15% response rate at BEST. Sometimes it's as low as 1%. There are a lot of factors like spam control, or peole just don't check their email, the site hasn't had work done to it in a year and a half.... also some people just don't know enough about seo to realize that getting a link exchange email is GOOD thing and a lot of people don't care about search engine results, they have advertising.

Link exchange requests, it depends on what your site is.
If your site is unique and has lots of contents, then they will link to you.
Other factors are: what is your site's theme? If adult, casino, etc. most people don't want to be associated with these, so the best thing is to find similar sites and email them for link exchange.

I find it very hard the first time around, then as you rack more PR, the easier it is. Also once you have an established site, the easier when you do the second site, etc.

When you start, don't hope for link exchange from PR 7 or 8. Instead, ask for links from PR 1,2,3. Some of them are nice and will give you links. Then slowly, as your PR raises, ask for PR 4 and 5 exchange.

I avoid sites with PR 0 on their links page. Won't exchange with them, unless it's a new site. If it's been around a while, the index has great PR, but 0 on the link page, what's the point? That's IMO.

What is your opinion on programs like: Arelis 4 or linkexplore? They claim to do silimar things to what you mentioned earlier in this post, but do you think they are worth the $100 or so and do you think they use unappropriate methods that the SE will devalue your links for?

Nah to really, unless you have the money to throw around, why not just do it yourself and not have to pay someone.

Thanks for the opinion. I am currently going after links like crazy, but it IS a lot of time... Do you know of anything in particular that is say "Free" that automates it, maybe a online tool/script.... or something like that?

There are other ways to get the links, you know - the trouble with link exchanging is that you end up with more or less as many links going out as coming in - and ideally you want more coming in.

As for forum sigs - they do count, but their effect is very limited - I've seen plenty of reports of multiple links from the same site to another as being heavily devalued after about 20-50 links. Seen this myself on my own forums - I can add a single anchor text to a few tens of thousands of pages, but if the search term is fairly competitive, the impact with be very small.
