theme specific links

How is a sites theme determined, is it based on many pages of the site all considered together for a certain topic, or is it determined on a page by page basis, if you get a link from a site that has a page about one thing but the general topic of the site is something else, but most of that particular page is on a certain topic, would this be considered a theme specific link for that topic?

I understand in general the "theme" link benefits, but confused on how google determines that it is of the same theme.

thanks seo guy, from what that thread says, it seems no one is really sure, which is mostly what I expected given how much we really know about G's internal thinking.

It's most probably guessed as similar using the related: function.

I think theme is based at a page level, not a site level. Forums are a good example. Most of the time the Adsense ads being displayed are related to the content of the page, not the site.

If you're talking about link valuing theme & the SE's, I have not seen any evidence that the search engines consider theme at all when it comes to valuing links.

Theme would probably be determined by on-page factors, not least using the Circa technology that Google applies via AdSense.

When I set up my business site, I knew that there would be a significant number of links from webmaster sites to it, so I included some simple webmaster resource articles I'd written, and included "webmaster resources" in the index page title, to help with relevancy. No idea of the effect, but it's more an investment in the long-term possibilities of SEO.

I'm not too sure how far theming may or may not be currently applied by Google - but certainly off-topic links still have effect.
