Whitespace and html code dispersement?

Does the way your html code is written affect your google-a-bility much? Like if you have a few lines of blank white space and space out your code here and there to help keep the nesting of tables etc. easy to work with when editing, does that make your keywords show up as less important? I guess my real question is in counting the closeness to the top of the documents, as far as keywords go, is it the amount of code (like individual characters) in the way or just the amount of space period...

so for example would

<table width="400">
<tr>
<td>

<p>
Some Keywords
</p>

</td>
</tr>
</table>

be less favourable then

<table width="400"><tr><td><p>Some Keywords</p></td></tr></table>

I'm an old dinosaur using notepad so it gets lumped together however I see fit... which I am starting to think, is probably not the best way..

actually it is effecient if you can read it to eliminate whitespace altogether, not for SEO but for performance. LEss whitespace means smaller file size means loads faster Take a look at the source for www.digitalpoint.com As for SEO, closer to the top the better for your kw's IMO

If you have a large site and really want to get into it, I recommend W3Compiler you can find it at W3Compiler . com. They have a pretty good trial period so you might be able to finish your site for free.

PS. They are not part of W3C

If all your pages are dymanic i'm sure you can load your page into memory and automatically replace all the white spaces with nulls.

A deal depends on how much whitespace you have. Sure, you can squeeze out every inessential blank and line-end, but you pay a price in HTML legibility whenever you want to change anything on the page. Look at an ESPN stats page some time: I don't think those people know what a line ending is--they have "lines" that are many thousands of bytes long. OK, your browser can read them, but can you? ESPN can make the excuse that the lines are auto-generated and made anew frequently, but can any of us say that?

In HTML as in program code, it's well to have enough spacing to be able to clearly see the form of your code by eye. (I wouldn't want to guess how many nonstandard-HTML pages are the result of broken nesting owing to illegibility from lack of indents.)
