CSS2 Drop down menus

I've been working with CSS for quite some time now, but have recently been interested in migrating to using the enhanced features available in CSS 2. The biggest thing holding me back from working more in depth with the new version of CSS is the limitations in the implementation in IE.

The ability to deliver content by creating dynamic drop down menus instead of using Javascript or Flash allows us to create spiderable menu structures, add links, and make sites more navigable. Why don't we use them more then?

I suggest that the problem arises with the lack of consistent CSS 2 implementation support across browsers. It seems that each firm implements a different subset of CSS 2, but no one implements them all.

I don't want this thread to turn into an anti-Microsoft IE bashfest, because Netscape/Mozilla seem just as bad.

This is just something that I think needs to get sorted out soon, or CSS 2 will disappear.

It's really a shame. So now what? We wait for CSS 3? Perhaps the next incarnations of browsers will support CSS 2 adequately. Then we would only be waiting a couple years until implementation

Are we supposed to still support Netscape? What's the percentage of Netscape users these days?

Who cares about netscape? but what about mozilla/firefox and opera.

From what i understand, Opera is popular in Europe - and is definitely popular in mobile devices. All the sony-ericsson smart phones (including p800).

AOL owns Netscape, and although they've put it on the back burner lately, there's always a possibility that they'll decide to integrate it into a future version of AOL. (talk about a sudden jump in market share).

Firefox and Opera are the ones to watch though. if you haven't downloaded Firefox and tried it yet, i highly recommend you do so. I use it as my primary web browser, and seo guy uses it as well (but not to the extent as me). Considering that it's not finished yet, it's amazingly powerful.

From the accessibility standpoint, the Mozilla project has the capability to be easily ported over to various platforms whether M$, Linux, or whatever flavour of *nix they're working on in mainland China. Although IE has a huge market share right now, I think this web browser game is far from over - just my two cents.

I think it's less than 10% of people that don't use IE, but I don't like to upset them as they could be customers.

CSS 2 tends to fail gracefuly when a browser doesn't support it. It's just a case of checking that it doesn't look too bad in unsupported browsers. Having said that I'm still learning so am not completely up to speed on all that can go wrong.

One funny thing - I had a look at the W3C Schools CSS reference page. The page is about CSS but is written completely in tables.

There are plenty of ways to get around the bugs in the different CSS implementations... As for drop down menus, check out http://www.htmldog.com/articles/suckerfish/bones/ for a very crawler friendly workaround.

Cheers, J
