Search engine / Directory
What is the actual difference between a search engine and a directory?

Web directories are maintained by human editors (e.g. DMOZ - which incidentally after 11 months still hasn't listed me ), search engines operate algorithmically.

One more thing I would like to add is that: Search Engines nearly list all the websites submitted to them but Directories only list the quality ones.

Directories include websites according to their categories. So you can find out website in particular category, while search engines include all sites. Directories are edited by human.

"but Directories only list the quality ones"... there are 20 times the number of automated, no quality control, accept any site that will link back directories as there are good ones that evaluate a site based on it's merit.

Try forgetting nearly all search engines than the major ones of Google, Yahoo and MSN. If you can, it's nice paying to be listed in some quality directories, gradually, (Do not reciprocate) .
They will bring you PR and help in your overal search engine ranking because of Pageranked direct links, but if you be listed in hundreds of minor search engines, because of their page codes, not direct links in most cases, you cannot experience a boost in your SERPs.

etech-racheal has rightly said Directories include websites according to their categories. So one can find out the website in a particular category. It looks some what like a telephone directory. On the other hand, Search Engine includes all sites irrespective of quality.
