Google 'site:' command
Hi,
When I enter 'Site:www.pets4homes.co.uk' to find all the pages on my site, it says it has 190,000 results even though it doesnt show hardly any of them. My site doesnt even have this many pages, I would estimate around 5,000.
Is the Site command broken? I have also noticed recently that it is showing a lot of old cached versions of my pages from around May this year which are supplemental and not displaying the new updated pages which I have been amending the titles and descriptions lately.
Anyone else seeing odd behaviour like this with the site command and supplemental results?

Hi Mark,
the google site: sommand has been hit and miss for a long time now. I had a look and it looks like they have a load of duff pages from when you were using session ID's or something.
These don't seem to be harming you though, or do you have any evidence that they are?
Cheers,
Paz.

Hi Paz, those pages arent harming me, its just that I'm not sure where google is picking them up from. About a month ago I had a few thousand of my pages in the index that werent supplemental and was getting a lot more hits (over 6000 a day from google). Recently a lot of these pages have disappeared from the index and more of my pages are supplemental. I'm still getting around 3000 hits per day from google, but was better when all the adverts on my site where in the index.
Not sure what I can do, I've submitted a google sitemap with all the pages I want indexing. I've also updated all the page titles and descriptions to make them more unique. Probably best if I just wait for google to reindex all my pages.

Hi Mark,
I think your drop in hits could have a lot to do with the summer break, at least that's what I'm seeing with my sites. I must admit though, I've never seen anything quite as stale as the results from Google's site command recently - not just your site. Also I visited your site on Saturday (can't remember why) and it was down for 20 mins. Is your hosting reliable?
I'm watching a lot of sites closely, and I'm seeing more a lot more sites with supplemental pages, and I can't understand why Google are displaying results for pages that just don't exist any more (I checked your 404 page and that's OK).
I'd be interested to see how you get on with the sitemap. You've probably already found out that there's some useful feedback from Google in there too.
Cheers,
Paz.
