Sonja, Google rewards advertisers for relevancy, by giving a quality score to the ads.
The quality score is calculated with a very complicated formula, that combines the RELEVANCY OF THE WEBPAGE for the keywords, with the RELEVANCY OF THE ADCOPY, with the ACCOUNT HISTORY(how your ads performed in the past) and with the CLICK THROUGH RATE..
Well, if you score good at these, it means that you are relevant.. and by paying less, you get to be in front of people who bid more but have lower Quality Score..
Yahoo just displays the ads in the order of the bidding..
P.S. - Google has even more traffic, and a larger network of ads distribution..

flaviussirop summed it up pretty well.
The one thing that I would add, and this is only my experience, but it seems to be noticeably more expensive in yahoo/overture than in google. This may just be for my niche.
To anyone thinking of getting started with paid ads, I would suggest google ahead of yahoo.
I will also throw out the new msn as being a decent third option. The traffic we get from them isn't all that much, but it is coming in at about 30% cheaper than google and it is converting much better. $50/sale in google, $22/sale in msn. I just wish I could get more traffic out of them.
Cheers,
Scott

I've actually found that Yahoo is easier to control and brings a better $/acquisition rate than Google. You have full access to be in whatever position you choose for each keyword, as opposed to being subject to the Google indexing system.
Google is the monster, but don't count out Yahoo and MSN until you give them a shot.
