I always read about common ways of obtaining back links to your site: directory submission, links from blogs, article submission, etc..

How about generating free templates for wordpress, joomla or create website templates and submit them to the open source web design: http://www.oswd.org

If I was a web design company, that would seem to be a real good way of generating backlinks because the templates would contain a link back to your site. I did a check on one person who has a popular template and noticed that the preview page has a nice page rank and he and has a ton of backlinks in google from sites that used his template. Of course not everyone is going to be ethical, but it is a chance you will be taking.

Interested to know if anyone has any thoughts on this?

A very common nice one way backlink and is often mislead is if you are a Webdeveloper, i always like to add on the bottom of my clients pages, powered by ME! this is always my favourite 1 way backlink!
