Mod rewrites

Here's the situation. I have a site that is a static site. I'm ranking well on most of my pages. I would like to make my site more dynamic, but I don't want my pages to loose rank because I would have to change them from example.html to example.php. Is it possible to go dynamic with the site, but keep the page named example.html, example.html?

I like OScommerce so I would probably like to use OScommerce as the shopping cart for the site. Is it possible getting the above results with OScommerce?

Thanks

I'm a big fan of URL rewrites. I use them on every new site that I create.

I started an article a while back about Creating URL Rewrites , but I have been meaning to upload it for some time now.

You can accomplish maintaining your existing URLs, even if you are using a pre-existing infrastructure like osCommerce, although it will take some more work and tweaking.

Let me know if you have any specific questions.

This is good to know. To make this happen with OScommerce for example, all changes are done on the .htaccess file right?

Hi,

I've heard of seo fixes for OScommerce so perhaps you can have a look. It's not all htaccess though as I remember. There's one setting I know of in the control panel where you have to enable cookies to avoid urls with session IDs, for example.

I know of one site that's been completely messed up by OScommerce though.

Cheers,
Paz.

I know with osCommerce there is the "Ultimate SEO URLs " contribution that will do the rewrites for you. If you want to maintain legacy URLs you will need to add some additional rewrite functionality yourself though.

Once you get the hang of using URL rewrites, it really isn't that difficult.

I'm familiar with the Ultimate SEO URL contribution. I've installed it before. I guess I just have to study mod rewrites. The next thing would be to make sure my titles stay the same as they are currently. Are there any straight to the point "easy" tutorials for newbs diving into mod rewrites.
