SEO for Yahoo
Given that their share of search is so small is it worth doing anything to my site to optimise for Yahoo?

Personally, I feel that optimising your site correctly / appropriately, well enable it to perform well on all the search engines.
The correct advice is never to optimise a site just for the search engines anyway - as you'll end up with a site thats of no value to anyone. They say you should tweak/update/optimise your site for it's target visitors, but in doing so you should consider the search engines and how they spider a site. In essense, optimise for both users and search engines - one without the other is a complete waste of time.

The share of search is exactly related to specific keywords used, many webmasters rely on Yahoo and MSN traffic even if they have top ten Google placements, for many keywords, Yahoo outperforms the others.

Sometimes the quality of my Yahoo traffic is better. They seem stickier while the Google searchers have a smaller attention span or are looking for quick hits. I've had good success with Yahoo, it's not all about numbers. I advertise with them occasionally too and have had good PPC success.

Hi TestSherpa, you made me curious, what metrics did you use to determine that the quality of your Yahoo traffic is better ?

Leftyblogs, not sure if the PPC helps, but I did notice I rose in rankings around the same time. Could be a coincidence more than causation.
Hi Waveshoppe, I take a look at where the traffic ends up and how long they stay (Referrer + # of visits + pages/hits/kbs/etc.). I make most of my $ through advertising more than affiliate sales or my eBooks, so the more pages the better. That's what I mean by better traffic. The Google traffic seems to stay less.
Your sites would probably be more about conversion than traffic being more ecom centered -- just guessing. Mine is an educational site focused on ad $ so the more page views the better.

TestSherpa, you were right on, we have no choice but to look at conversions. Oddly MSN drives high conversions though traffic from them is maybe 25% of what we get from Google.
The likelihood of a conversion is substantially increased when you throw a gazillion visitors into the picture, but it would be neat to see some solid test data. Maybe Pit 1000 Google visitors against 1000 MSN visitors and see which converted the most.
By they way, thanks for sharing I learned something new.

I agree with Mark, i too feel one should keep visitors in mind while optimizing or its of no use even if your visitors comes and leave immediaterly.
