relation of links

Just wanted to get everyones opinion on something. I know that unrelated links won't help as much as related ones, but will they hurt? Also, how do they tell what is related? I have a site for mens skin care products but none of my KWs would be the same as the ones for something like a dating site-which IMO would be related.

What are your thoughts on this?

One of the things that google received when they bought Applied Semantics (as part of AdSense) was the utilization of its "CIRCA ontology to understand and extract key themes of a page, whereas Google relies solely upon user trends and patterns, which are often inconsistent." It is presumable that Google has adapted the technology they aquired from them and utilizes it in more than one technology or product.
