Exclamation About Sub-Domains

Dear All,

Exactly How many sub domains should a website have? Can it be between 10-15?

I am asking this because my site's domain name is related to travel and i want to cover all topics as possible in this website.

Please Advise.

Thanks

you can use N number of subdomain on your website, there is no limitation (if you hosting provider offer you unlimited subdomain access)

For SEO, I prefer to review latest Google Update for subdomain and folders

I remember seeing Matt Cutts suggesting that you shouldn't have more than 20 but I can't find a link.

Last time I looked Google had more than 20 themselves though!

here is a link to a sub-domains post from Matt Cutts http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/subdo...subdirectories/ not sure if this is the one you were thinking Paz?

I think for Travel sub-domains work great, plus it makes it easier to geo-locate.

Not sure what your site is about, but say you have www.canada.travel you could then create us.canada.travel and geo-locate this to your US market....you could keep going with your diff. target countries.

What is the best way? Either to make 20 subdomains or book 20 different websites. Which is the best option?
Please advice

In my opinion, why having sub-domains (abc.domain.com), you can use a directory system (domain.com/abc). It will give more good results.

Sub-domains are treated as a unique website. So, I would use a directory mechanism rather than having sub-domain.

Limiting the number of subdomains is always great, this is indirectly telling Google that you will stay away from possible spam attempts but I prefer having folders, they are much better.

But in my case site's domain name is related to travel and i want to cover all topics as possible in this website.
so can i cover all topics(like horoscope, christmas, weddings, honeymoon, etc.) in the directory format....
I am asking this because i was told in this forum that i should use subdomains for all topics other than travel. http://www.seo-guy.com/forum/thread22324.html

Hi Ruchi,

In general practice it has been observed that people use 10-12 subdomains for promotion. As Paz has already told you about the situation, you can cover all of the keywords for promotion in less than 20 keywords. So, go for those subdomains if and only if you have enough content for promotion in the subdomains, not just 2-3 pages in each. If you have enough content (what I suppose), use sub domains strategy.

All the best!
