advice on pagerank and link problems

Hi All,

OK, here is the info. Any help or advice on the site is appreciated. My apologies if it is overkill.....

The URL is LAPSAKY Organic Cotton Baby Clothes. The site is the online outlet for our line of organic cotton baby clothes, which we also sell conventionally to retailers of various sorts.

The site has been up for about 3 months. It is our first site. My bro and I did the work. I am an old fart computer geek by profession but have no experience before in this kind of thing (I do C/C++/FORTRAN etc for a living). The business is my wife's.

We started by downloading the OsCommerce (PHP) source, and have then heavily modified it. The goal was to make it our own, as well as deal with all the little problems we found with the original code. In terms of optimization here is what we have done.
1) made sure there were reasonable header tags for all pages. the keywords, title and description are dynamically built from the mySQL database, but we then have the option of tweaking it all for each page. We havent tweaked them all, but have done some of the products.
2) Added H1 tags for some of the relevant parts of each page
3) made a sitemap with plain HTML rather than PHP that points to every page and product on the site. The sitemap is accessible from every page. We have focussed most attention on the splash page (www.lapsaky.com) and main page (www.lapsaky.com/catalog).
4) used mod_rewrite to get rid of all the ? components of the URL and made them appear as straight HTML
5) run the pages through the w3c validator and tweaked them till most of them pass as HTML 4.01 transitional. The places that dont validate involve some javascript, and there is still some browser dependent stuff in there which we are gradually removing.
6) modified the osCommerce code to recognize when robots/spiders are hitting the site and surpress the OsCSid string in the URL (eg
http://www.lapsaky.com/catalog/inde...ace555c6a202f3c
)
7) submitted the site to a number of directories like DMOZ
8) subscribed to a couple of adwords campaigns
9) contacted just a few places so far for link exchanges.

The good news is that the search engines are spidering the site. if you enter lapsaky into google you will find that it has found all the pages, and I see a couple of hundred additional entries from outside listings. A number of other engines are also spidering us. We are getting 50-100 unique visitors daily.
We are getting inquiries from retailers asking about buying our goods to put on their web sites, or sell in their stores. I can
see the bots crawling our page from the apache logs and webalizer, etc.

The bad news is that our page rank is currently 3. We arent getting many online buyers. Another thing that really bugs me is that if I type
link:www.lapsaky.com
into a google search window I get nothing. None of the tools I have tried report any backlinks. But I know I have some. Admitedly a pitiful few (20-100) by the standards of this group. But why arent those pitiful few being reported?

I am now going to go through all the good information provide at SEO guy and try to fix things, but I would sure appreciate
critical eyes looking at the site as well.

Oh Yeah... The most critical keywords that we would like
to rank well on are
"organic cotton baby clothes"

Thanks so much for any advice you have.

Thumbs up

actually - at quick glance - I think you did a pretty good job......

I'm seeing backlinks from your pages - dmoz and google directories....

Only suggestion I have with a fast look is if your trying to target the keywords:
"organic cotton baby clothes

you should have a direct link to a page named that with achor:

something like:

<a href="/organic-baby-clothes.html">Organic Cotton Baby Clothes</a>

that would definetly help...

Something I would do is change your image to text whre it says "Organic Cotton Baby Clothes" You can make it look exactly the same in text as you can with an image so why not have it as the first thing that is read.

You could utilize a copywrite or disclaimer in the footer saying something like:
<p>All <a href="http://www.lapsaky.com">Organic Cotton Baby Clothes</a> designs are trademarked originals of Lapsaky.com</P>

I dont know and highly doubt their trademarked but Im just giving an example of how to incorporate your main kw's in your link text back to your main page from every other page.

Also you want to remove the text at the top left corner, if you cant read it, it shouldnt be there. It says "LAPSAKY Organic Cotton Baby Clothes" and is pretty much illegible to users and is color matched anyways so its a text book spam no no from 1999 :-)

Other then that I would just concentrate on a backlink hunt, you have a really nice looking site and I think many people would link to your site, myself included if I was in a related industry. The goal is to go for related backlinks (They dont have to be clothing but it would be nice) and get your kw's in the anchor text. You might ask someone for a backlink with the anchor "organic cotton baby clothes" or another person just hte anchor "baby clothes" etc switch the text coming in up a bit for good results.

In fact ya know what I think http://www.davanti.net/ can be your first :-) We havent even started their links campaign yet but if you email seobob@seo-guy.com and tell him you want to exchange links consider it done :-)
Nice work so far

Oh yeah one last thing I'd be interested in taking a look at your OS commerce SID script, do you mind posting it in the coding forum?

"modified the osCommerce code to recognize when robots/spiders are hitting the site and surpress the OsCSid string in the URL (eg
http://www.lapsaky.com/catalog/inde...ace555c6a202f3c"

Thanks Morgan.

We went back and forth over the text vs image of the string "LAPSAKY Organic Cotton Baby Clothes."

We went with the image because so many browsers rendered the large fonts we wanted terribly and we wanted it to look good.

Then we tried to cheat with the invisible font. We put that in last week, and I already regret it.

I guess I need to figure out how to do it "right".

I like the trademark stuff idea in the footer. We are trying to trademark the logo right now (what a hassle for an amatuer!).

I will post the next source for the PHP tonight. It may be tangled up and I would like to post something
clean.

Thanks again!

Hello my green friend.

Might be worth setting up an Ebay store with just a few products if not interested in selling a lot. I have an Ebay store with just a few things in it - I get some good enquiries - also shows up in Google quote a lot for the keywords. You could call it the Organic Cotton Baby Clothes store and then use loads of your keywords in the description of the store.

The store I think costs around $10 a month and a pittance maybe 10c or something per item. Worth it just for the visibility and of course the links from Google.

Its basically another shopfront - and if you happen to sell as well its a bonus (without the hassle of auctions).

Good luck - love the site!
