I know a few people here have mentioned using XML news feeds-how have they been working from an SEO stand point? I've been doing some research & I've found some PHP based & some java based. I definately don't want the java (unless someone knows of a reason that it would be ok). I messed around with a PHP based one but I couldn't get anything to work.

Any tips? What to use, sites that have them up & running, etc. Thanks.

On the SEO front its useful to create fresh content on your site. This keeps GoogleBot interested in your site.

Its free content too which is always welcome.

I dunno what area your site is in but http://www.feedsfarm.com might be useful, it allows you to get RSS feeds based on a query, e.g. microsoft.

Magpie RSS is a great PHP parser: http://magpierss.sourceforge.net/

Its good for most scenarios, and also parsers Atom feeds.

Here's a basic tutorial of how to do it with Java (Not JavaScript of course) if you're interested:

Actually there should be no reason why using Java as opposed to PHP should be any problems. Actually I'd believe it's probably easier done with Java since they've got a very useful RSS utility package. Never tried it with PHP though. But of course if you want to go with Java your server must have JSP support.

I ended up getting the php thing installed and I put in the link for an RSS feed but nothing shows up. The php is in the little collapsed table on the bottom of the right side menu. I'm sure that I'm doing something totally wrong since I have never done this before

I am considering a RSS feed for my site myself, but I have a concern about it. Yes, search engines love fresh content, but if this RSS content is already been shown somewhere else on the Net, wouldn't the site be penalized for duplicated content?

Not neccessarily. Generally search engines take into account all information included on the page. Generally feeds are served on website, in a template format so your page would still contain unique text/content when compared to another page.

This is a sample page using an include statement to serve an .xml feed that I've been playing with - http://www.feedforall.com/rss-ssi.shtml

You can also export the feed to a static html file using a template to frame the feed.
