Is a spider really a woman?

I have been wondering about this for a long time - and I know you techies will have the answer for me.

In relation to "relevant" "themed" links.

How the ..... does a spider know if a backlink is a themed backlink?

Okay Googlebot goes through my links all of a sudden she stops.... ahh I see here - Irish Ladie - has got another link from a jewelry store - then bingo... this is a themed link, therefore this is a really good link for her to have and of course for Google - so lets give her a gold star? Then she sees a link to "fly catcher" then she says..........mmmmmmmm not really Irish Ladies style .........

Are spiders really that intelligent?

yep, they're getting there, I saw somewhere that google had purchased a company that specialized in word meanings and relevancy.... threw up a couple red flags for me with regards to related linking. Get ahead of the crowd and start with relevant links only. Try not to link out to unrelavant stuff, I'm sure it's not a huge deal but I'm testing the theory right now, I have a site that I give links to other people so that they will all link to my investment site. the site giving out links to these investment sites has nothing to do with investing, it's losing it's rankings... it's not a big deal because it's a testing ground anyway. The site that is getting links to it from the investment sites is going up in rankings. All relevant type links coming in. I'm not sure If I'm giving the other sites really any benefit at all because it's a non related site linking to them. I think they will still let the benefit pass on, but, I think that the sites with more related links will do better. That way if there are only a few sites and they all have unrelated links coming in, then google will still have some listings, they just want the best at the top.... wow I blabbered hey?

The company was called applied cemantics

Anyways determining relevance isnt that difficult. You follow a link and record a few characteristics of the page before you leave, you take note of the anchor text as you travel across the path of the the link and then you guage the same charateristics against the destination page.

Imagine how fast 100,000 computers can answer a series of yes no questions in a checklist when comparing 2 pages.

So is this for outbound, inbound or both ?

Inbound seems to be the more you have the better regardless of relavancy (I just see all the sites on seochat - they're the only links they have - PR6 etc #1 in rankings)

Troublesome huh ?

Inbound seems to be more but for outbound links your anchor text is imprortant if you are SEO and giving link to Sports pages with anchor text "Sport" it will definately have effect on your page content
