Putiing a couple links in your signature file is a great way to get spidered.

Then set out on getting links on relevant pages that get spidered frequently then be vewy, vewy patient.

The cheapest way is to set up a section in your site where you intend to display others related links. Then start by posting a request here in the link exchange forum asking others to exchange links.

Before you do that though I'd submit to all the free directories and set out appx $3-500 for paid directories. You can find more information in the directories forum.

Just ask somebody indexed in google to add your text link on his page for couple days. Thats it!

Best ways to get links:
Link exchanges
Post press releases
Directories
Buying text links

For link exchanges I personally go into the dmoz directory, find the category that is related to my site, and then ask every website I'm interested in if they want an exchange.

A list of about 250 free-to-submit-to directories can be found here:
http://info.vilesilencer.com/main.php?rock=add_url.php

A list of press release websites:
webworkshop.net/seoforum/viewtopic.php?t=3905

It's best to set up a 'throw-away' email address when adding your site, because you may get a bit of spam. Happy submitting
