What is Coldfusion?
I know this is probably a daft question; but what is Coldfusion? Is it a programming language like PHP? Are you limited to working with ASP databases?
I've always wondered, and see a growing number of sites that have started to use coldfusion.
Any background info would be good

Is it a programming language like PHP? Basically, yes.
Are you limited to working with ASP databases? It has nothing to do with ASP. It can connect to pretty much any kind of database.

Yup, what she said. ASP is another programming language like php or cold fusion. All three can connect to different types of databases such as SQL, MySQL, Access and others...

Im not sure what the advantages are. I've never used coldfusion before. Mainly because it cost a lot of $$$ so I hear. PHP and MySQL are free so thats what I stick to.

The advantages of ColdFusion versus ASP or PHP is a more robust server, faster ramp up time, and fast learning curve.
I've also found that CF code is less cryptic than ASP or PHP.
PHP is popular because it's open source, so lot's of people like that idea. ASP is popular because it's a Microsoft platform.
Personally, I am very biased to ColdFusion since to me it is the easiest to learn and use, but all of the above mentioned programming languages will be able to do what you need them to

Although coldfusion is reportedly easy to pick up, (And it is) finding reliable hosting, and "professionals" to code in it (Present company excluded DD) can be very hard. Support and info are not as readily available, but it is still very appreciated by those that learn it, I dunno I am a php guy myself.
