First SEO Job

I have taken my first SEO job and I have some questions I hope the experts on the forum will be able to help me with.

I am building site for "widgets in the town". In my template page I have in the right column list of text links to "red widgets in the town", "blue widgets in the town" etc. . - 18 in all.

These are very competitive variations of the main keyphrase and these pages will be paid special attention hence anchored text is very important.

However there is a side effect to this.Even for the content pages that are not paid special attention "widgets" and "town" will be top or amongst the top keywords. The density for these words is between 7-9 % on each page.

My question is if there is any danger for these pages to be classified as cookie-cuter by Google and if density for these 2 keywords is too high?

Also is there any benefit in renaming my index page to widgets.html if I link only to domain name (http://domain.com instead of http://domain.com/widgets.html)

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Almir, Welcome to the forums. If I understand correctly... you're concerned about your navigation tripping a trigger for duplicate content. If so, no. Not so long as each page has unique content.

Note: If you're really using a template I'd encourage you to limit it to design stuff only and to use an includes file for navigation, footers etc.

The second one about renaming your default... if it's all linked to as the domain it doesn't make any difference what you call it but check those outside links first (to make sure al are doing similar).

Hi

thanks for your answer.

There is no duplicate content. It is just that the link text is so keyword rich that the main keywords always have highest keyword density.

So my question is can it appear like a cookie-cuter for Google spider?

Would it make sense to link to main home page using the name of the index page: eg: http://domain/keyword.html instead of only http://domain/.

Thanks

About the keyword rich navigation... shouldn't create any issues as long as you have a reasonable amount of unique text on each page.

About linking to home... always use www.domain.com if that's how outside links point to you.

I have more or less finished on-site optimisation. Now comes the difficult part - and that is acquiring links. I have started looking at the backlinks of some of my competitors ... but frankly when I see how much rubbish is there I have to sift through it makes me desperate.

Most similar sites with Pr 5,6,7 do not even have webmasters email on their site so I can't contact them for link exchange. I guess they couldn't care less about IBL.

The other thing I am doing is looking up in Google "link exchange" + keyhrase and "add your url" + keyphrase etc.

I will build a directory for 3 way linking soon. However I have feeling I won't be able to acquire enough links to compete with the guys on the top. My aim is to come in the top 10 within 6-9 months. The site already has PR4 due to some one-way links from PR5 site.

I wonder if my approach is right? Where should I put most effort to acquire IBL as fast as possible? What are step that should be taken to acquire IBL?

Thanks

You do not have to get links from PR5, 6,and 7 to rank a website unless you want high PR. Aim lower and you will find there are plenty of sites willing to exchange links with you.

Firstly step in my opinion would be to submit to all the directories first, free and paid ones (check that the page your link will be on is indexed by google). Then go for the link exchanges using your "link exchange + keyhrase" technique. You could even use automated software such as Arelis ti find them.

You could also try digitalpoints co op which would give you lots of inbound links if you have a second site you could run the ads on.

Your keyword phrase "widgets in the town" does not sound too competitive, the site could be ranked in 3 months.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for giving me directions , I was lost in the woods.
Widget was just a mock term, the site is actually for estate agents in London,UK - there are established names in the market and it might not be that easy to get the place in top 10 club.

Some of them employ dodgy methods... eg domain farm made with sites with little content ... looks to me like a good example of spamming
