What is Alexa based on?
How valuable or useful is Alexa? I was wondering what it was based on, and whether as a "client" I should take it seriously.
Does is consolidate links, pages, traffic, etc. into a single, usefuel metric?

I'd take it only as seriously as my client (smiley here). It's actually quite a waste. It takes data only from those that have the Alexa toolbar installed. The only people who care.... have the Alexa toolbar installed.

Alexa rank isn't show an actual traffic for websites. Sites for Web and SEO-masters have a more highly rank than other sites. Usually Alexa toolbar installed on webmasters computers only.

I think Fluff is the correct answer? Ok, what do I win? Alexa was cool until people started abusing it and inflating there rankings too show off and try and get more ad money.

That`s right, it is not a project for the SEO`s time.... it is something for the more "naif" Internet.

Despite the bias toward webmasters (who else installs the Alexa toolbar?), I believe that if a site is in the top-1000, then that is probably a signficant enough data point to suggest it's a fairly popular site - my two cents.

I still think its usefull. For example check sites which you think have high traffic and you will see they are ranked well. Its also pretty obvious when you get a poorly designed site with no backlinks/PR/Rankings with a high Alexa rank that something fishy is going on.

i think alexa rankings are only useful to webmasters when they want to sell their sites or sell text links - i'd use it to support the value of a site - only if the rankings are good in the first place
