Google recently registered (March 16th) a trademark for the term "Trustrank". The above is a link to the Stanford document about this written in '04.

Interesting reading. I like this one:

"Search engine companies typically employ staff members who specialize in the detection of web spam, constantly scanning the web looking for offenders. When a spam page is identified, a search engine stops crawling it, and its content is no longer indexed."

There's a daunting job. Event though the SERPS can be pretty bad sometimes, they could be worse without these dedicated search elves.
