Counting clicks in a SEO friendly way

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to count clicks in a SEO friendly way in scripts?

Look at the discussion here: Avoiding hijack issues

I hope it is okey to link to an discussion elsewhere, but if anyone know how to solve it it should be here.

You have seen my directory http://www.i-partner.no. I'm counting clicks with a combination of javascript and redirect. The SE's won't follow the onclick javascript (I have tested), but will follow the regular url. And to be absolutely sure I'm not making any problems for those listed the redirect is a 301. Don't know if I could have used a 301 without the javascript, so if anyone have a idea about that I will listen.

Drawback with my method is that clicks won't be counted if javascript is disabled, but the only reason I'm counting clicks is because I wan't to give the visitor a feeling of interaction (if any users think of click counting like that..)

Thanks for the response Eivind. Would be interesting to see the code you used.

The code I'm using is something like this:
<a href="http://www.somedomain.com" target="_blank" onclick="window.open('/out.asp?ID=123','_blank');return false;">Anchor text here</a>

I have also tested this version:
<a href="http://www.somedomain.com" target="_blank" onclick="window.open('http://www.directoryname.com/out.asp?ID=123','_blank');return false;">Anchor text here</a>

The onclick wasn't followed in this situation either.

Out.asp is a regular 301-redirect in ASP.

This one seems to work as well

<a href="http://www.domain.com" class="ttl" title="http://www.domain.com" onclick="window.location.href='/adclick.asp?id=74&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Edomain%2Ecom';return false;">anchor text</a>

Tanks for the feedback.

Are there anything else to take into consideration for PHP?

You can also take a look at this directory (which I do believe isn't finished):
http://www.wn.no/Katalog/

It's using pure 301-redirect on the links (no javascript). It's made of one of your SEO-fellows, and I see him as a person with good knowledge.

BTW, got an email from startsiden.no regarding 302-links. I'm not sure they quite believed that 302 could be a problem, and they meant theirs 302-links transfered PageRank before (Haven't tested 302 and PageRank since before Christmas, but that test showed that PR wasn't trasfered using 302). Anyway, what's good is that they are looking at it, and they are considering using 301 even if this is technically a wrong solution when it comes to rederecting and counting clicks (their words).
