Question Optimum number of keywords

Greetings and salutations,

There's a thread in another section that asks, "Is it okay to use just one keyword?" (to which you reply, "Probably not a good idea."). My question is, "What is the optimum number of keywords?" Is there such a thing?

What I gather from my research is that 3-4 keywords are best. If I use too many keywords I'm told it smells of spamming.

I feel like some sort of SEO Goldilocks. What's "just right?"

TIA, Bubba

Hi,

I just re-read the SEO-Guy tutorial, so there's no need for any RTFMs. If all else fails, read the instructions.

As I understand it -- one keyword is too little, and four is too many. Am I in the ballpark?

Bubba

Your in the ballpark. Of note though, I watch a couple of sites that are targeting a bunch of related terms for their home page. The well anchored links (and lots of them) seem to kind of feed off each other so to speak so they rank well for about 12-15 related phrases to the same page.

dilligaf,

Very interesting. Thanks for the heads-up.

I believe I'll stick to just 2-3 keywords for now. As I get better at this stuff -- who knows?

But those "12-15 related phrases" you mention are something I'll keep in mind.

Bubba

They're reallly over the top with the link building and the home page is a tough read (smiley here), so I'd stick the tried and true.
