Link Question?

Hello, looking to extract some information from experts on here. Can someone put in simple terms how I check to see if a link partner is not hiding or dissalowing my link on his/her page from getting indexed. I have read that the best way to improve SERPS and page rank is to exchange or establish links into my website. I would like to know is there a full proofway of checking this out other than putting the URL into a search engine and plodging through pages and pages of link partners.

Regards

Michael

I'll take a stab at this, though I don't guarantee it's a "full-proof" method. This method should work well if you're interested in checking out one or two of your link partners, but is probably too cumbersome for a mass-check.

I would search google like this:
"yoursite.co.uk" site:linkpartnersaddress.co.uk

e.g.:
"www.seafishingrigs.co.uk" site:ontheweb.co.uk

This will then just pull up the pages in that particular link partner's site that refer to your webpage. You then know that the page has been indexed by Google. You can then look at the code on that page to see if they are doing something sneaky to obscure the links to your page.

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for, but it will save you "plodging through pages and pages of link partners."

you should look at the page's source code for the meta robots tag, which should not exclude robots from indexing and following links on that page and also passing PR to your web site.
A page you get a link from should have a robots meta tag like this: <meta name="robots" content="index, follow"> to be sure it will do all the things stated upper

if you get a link from a page having a robots meta tag like this: <meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow"> that link is useless in terms of benefits for SEO, at most you can get a few hits from it if.

if the page is not using a meta robot tag you should not worry because everything works ok

I use an ASP script to pull URL's from my db and check the text for my domain. I'm sure there are PHP scripts that do similar and I've seen a couple of on-line tools.

BTW, there are always a few that I have to do manually (CGI or j/s) I'm waiting to see if these show up as BL's.

You need to make sure it's not a javascript links also. You gotta check the link by using the view source.

Dotn forget about checking the robots.txt doc to find out if a folder or page is blocked from spidering, really not worth it imo, 95 % of people are honest dont waste your valuable time and resources tracking down the 5% that arent

Hello everyone, great advice. I'm pretty new to all this as you can tell, so should I aim for getting lots of low ranking sites possibly personal pages because the author isnt knowledgable about hiding links and therfore isnt interested in page rank? And could the link finding tool that is in the tools section of this website be adapted to check for the sign of these robot.txt and java links? Sorry if that sounds totally elementary.

you should try as much as possible to get "themed backlinks"

a "themed backlink" is a link your site gets from another site in the same industry field as yours

if your site is about fishing and things related to this field you should try to submit your web site to the corresponding categories of some free directories and also you should try getting links from other sites related to fishing, sites that has related fishing terms in their url, title or content.

anchor text of backlinks is very important
